Hamilton is Still the Best Outfielder of 2010

Only two out of the top five outfielders from June 23 have returned this time around. The three newcomers to the list are all having their best seasons in their career. Will they remain on the top five list by the end of the season? Only time will tell.

1. Josh Hamilton, Texas Rangers: Hamilton is still the king of swing a month and a half later. Hamilton is still putting up sick numbers this season. Back on June 23, Hamilton was hitting .339 with 7 home runs and 53 RBI’s. Hamilton upped the ante even more! Hamilton is now hitting an insane .362, which is the best in baseball. To go along with his league leading average, Hamilton has 23 home runs and 75 RBI’s. After being injure for most of the 2009 season, Hamilton is making up for lost time this season. The Rangers are currently in first place, eight games ahead of the second place Athletics/Angels. This year belongs to the Rangers finally. The Rangers aren’t falling apart this season like in the past. Hamilton must stay healthy if they want to go to the World Series. If Hamilton continues on this pace, The Rangers should have no problem advancing to at least the ALCS.

Rangers Are The Fourth Best Team in Baseball

Three teams remain in the top five list from early in June. The two newcomers look like they are seriously making a run for the post-season. If these teams remain in the top five, the playoffs will look a lot different this year then the previous few years. Only one team on this list was in the playoffs last year. Things can change by the end of the season, but I think at least four out of the five on here are locks for the playoffs.

4. Texas Rangers: Back in June the Twins held the number four spot on the list. Now the Twins, who were thought to be one of the best teams going into this season have completely fell off the list and will even be lucky to make the post-season. The Rangers are finally making a serious run at the playoffs this season. For the last few seasons the Rangers always started off real well and then by the second half bottomed out. The reason for their failings has been their pitching the last few years. The Rangers were always known to have one of the best offenses in the league over the last 20 years, but their pitching has just been ok at best. This season the Rangers, with help from their President Nolan Ryan, are fixing their pitching problems. Ryan must feel embarrassed by the way the Rangers pitching staff performed over the years. Ryan was maybe the best pitcher of all time and now he can’t show the Rangers staff how it’s done? Ryan was tired of it, this year he added extra emphasis to make the pitching better and it has worked. C.J. Wilson is having the best season of his career with a 3.03 ERA. Colby Lewis hasn’t pitched since 2007 and was never known as a good pitcher, but now he has a 3.52 ERA. Tommy Hunter, who is in his second full season in the majors, is pitching lights out with a 2.31 ERA and an 8-0 record. Then of course, the addition of Cliff Lee, the much needed ace that the Rangers haven’t had since Kevin Milwood dominated in his prime.
Along with their always dominate offense led by, Josh Hamilton, Vladimir Guerrero, Ian Kinsler, and Nelson Cruz, the Rangers are a very dangerous team.

Neftali Perez is a Definite Rookie of the Year Candidate

The American League and National League have two players that stand out among the rest as the top rookies of the first half of the 2010 season. In a year that has been dominated by pitching, three out of the four candidates on the list are pitchers.

Neftali Feliz, Texas Rangers: The Rangers moved their closer of the past, Frank Francisco, to setup man this year to make room for their rookie sensation Feliz. Feliz is flourishing in his rookie season as the Rangers closer. At the halfway point in the season, Feliz has a 3.82 ERA and has saved 23 out of 25 opportunities for the Rangers. If Feliz keeps his staggering pace up, he could be the only closer in history to have more than 40 saves in his rookie season. In the past the Rangers struggled to find a dominant closer to end games for them. This year Feliz is a big reason why the Rangers are currently in first place in their division. At the age of 22, Feliz has a good chance to be the best closer in baseball for the next two decades.

Josh Hamilton Makes #1 of the Best Outfielders of 2010

There is an abundance of outfielders so far this season that are putting up huge numbers for their teams. Out of 20 hopefuls I narrowed the list down to five. Out of all the positions, outfielders are definitetly putting up the best stats this year.

1. Josh Hamilton, Texas Rangers: After being injured for most of the season last year, Hamilton is back in business this year topping the list of the best outfielders of 2010 so far. When I think of Josh Hamilton I think of raw power and memories of the 2008 home run derby at the old Yankee Stadium. When Hamilton is healthy, he is unstoppable. This year Hamilton has added a higher average to his offensive repertoire which may lead him to winning the Triple Crown. Hamilton is hitting .339 with 17 home runs and 53 RBI’s. As of now his average is good for fifth highest in baseball, his home runs are tied for fourth in all of baseball and his RBI’s are sixth best in all of baseball. Hamilton is one of the main reasons why the Rangers are having one of their best seasons in a long time. The Rangers are currently in first place in their division and are tied for the second best record in all of baseball. I would be surprised if the Rangers vanquish their lead. The Angels are the only team that can threaten the Rangers, but when you put both teams side-by-side, the Rangers have a better all around team.

Cruz hits game-winner

There were plenty of fond memories from Monday’s home opener, but in the end, it was a day to forget for the Indians and the sellout crowd at Progressive Field.

Fausto Carmona offered up another positive performance, and rising star Shin-Soo Choo enjoyed a highlight-filled game, but Cleveland still lost, drop-ping a 4-2 decision to the Rangers in front of 42,061 fans.

Nelson Cruz’s two-run home run off reliever Jamey Wright with one out in the 10th inning broke a 2-all tie and sent the Indians to their fourth straight defeat.

It was the second straight day that Cleveland’s bull-pen, a suspect group even before losing closer Kerry Wood to injury, had a hand in torching a potential vic-tory.

“It’s nothing to be happy about, but we’re not the only team that’s had struggles at the back end (of the bullpen),” said Indians manager Manny Acta. “It’s going to get better as the season goes on.”

Cleveland’s bullpen actually staved off the defeat for an inning after Wood’s replacement, right-hander Chris Perez, struggled again in the ninth inning.

The Texas Rangers acquired right-handed pitcher Edwar Ramirez on Tuesday from the New York Yankees for cash considerations. Ramirez, who turns 29 later this month, was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Feb. 28. He takes up the Rangers’ final spot on the 40-man roster.

Ramirez had a 5.73 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 22 innings of work (20 relief appearances) with New York in 2009. He had two stints with the Yankees last season, pitching the rest of the time at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre, where he went 1-5 with a 3.19 ERA in 29 games.

Ramirez was a regular in the Yankees’ bullpen in 2008 with a 5-1 record and a 3.55 ERA with 63 strikeouts in 55 1/3 innings. Opposing batters hit .215 against him.

A good season can tame Texas Rangers’ ballpark beast

In response to the question of how do you kill a vampire, one online advice column suggests pointing a cross soaked with holy water at the beast, driving a stake through its heart, cutting off its head and stuffing it with garlic

Reliable sources say that at no time during the Rangers’ 81 home games this season did they see Ron Washington walking around the ballpark with a wooden cross, holy water, a stake, a knife or garlic.

Despite that, for the first time in several years, the season will end with the ballpark not being accused of sucking the life out of Rangers teams.

The Rangers had an absolutely wonderful run, and it will end Sunday in Seattle. There have been challenges caused by injuries that forced Josh Hamilton, Michael Young and Ian Kinsler to miss more than 100 games total, yet Texas was in the playoff race until the last week of the season.

It was a tribute to the team, but it also was refreshing to not hear any excuses — about injuries or the ballpark.

If someone called the park a launching pad, it was in passing. The nasty wind currents that made home runs cheap miraculously disappeared or were ignored. No one campaigned for jack-hammering the Cuervo Club, which supposedly boomeranged winds behind home plate toward the outfield, carrying balls over the fence.

(A quick aside: With the Rangers financial problems, perhaps critics now understand that adding revenue sources such as the club are vital to the economic health of a sports franchise.)

This season was the first in many years that did not include multiple obscenities tossed at the ballpark

Holland ready to wrap up rookie year

ANAHEIM — Derek Holland’s rookie season is about to come to an end

Holland makes his final start on Wednesday night against the Angels. He brings a 6.14 ERA into the game and since 1972, when the Rangers first played in Texas, that’s the 11th-highest ERA for a Major League rookie with at least 100 innings pitched.

But the Rangers still think Holland got much out of his first season in the Major Leagues even though he made just five starts combined at Double- and Triple-A before getting up here.

“Well, for starters, one of the best things is he knows he can pitch here,” pitching coach Mike Maddux said. “That’s something everybody has to overcome and realize, ‘Yes, I can pitch in the big leagues.’ He showed that.

“He’s definitely become a four-pitch pitcher, willing to throw any pitch in any count. There has been a fusion that comes from trial and error on how to use all his pitches over the course of the year.”

Holland won his most recent start, beating Tampa Bay, 8-3, on Friday. But he allowed three runs in five innings and is now 1-5 with an 11.17 ERA in his past six games.

“I just want to finish strong and on a good note,” Holland said, “stay positive and give it everything I have.”

Blalock plates four as Texas gains ground

Five days ago, Rangers manager Ron Washington decided to put Hank Blalock back in the lineup.

Blalock, reduced to a reserve role since Chris Davis was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Aug. 25, was asked to breathe some life into the Rangers’ slumbering offense with Josh Hamilton and Michael Young still unable to play.

Blalock has done that.

He had two doubles, a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs to lead the Rangers to a 9-8 victory over the Athletics at the Coliseum on Wednesday. The win, combined with the Angels’ loss to the Yankees, moved Texas to within 6 1/2 games of first place in the American League West.
